• The Altimate™ mask is worn during sleep while at altitudes greater than 2500m (8000ft). It is a silicone mask that uses a specially designed neck tube to secure it in place.

    • It is used to improve sleep at high-altitude by alleviating the periodic breathing caused by exposure to environments at elevations greater than 2500m or (8000ft).

    • Poor sleep at high altitude is common and this is due in large part to the periodic breathing that often occurs at elevations higher than 2500m (8000ft).

      Periodic breathing (Cheyne Stokes breathing, or PB) is common at high altitude and becomes more frequent with increasing altitude. Periodic breathing involves alternating periods of deep breathing and shallow breathing. Typically, three to five deep breaths will be followed by a couple of very shallow breaths or even a complete pause in breathing. A pause in breathing like this usually lasts around 5 to 15 seconds and is called an apnea. Apneas may end with a gasp that sometimes wakes the individual or their sleeping companions!

    • Roughly 1 in 4 individuals will experience periodic breathing at 2500m (8000ft) with close to 100% of individuals experiencing periodic breathing at elevations higher than 4000m (13100ft).

    • Periodic breathing is not dangerous. It is a symptom of being at high altitude; however, it can be terribly annoying and exhausting to consistently lose sleep during a multi-day excursion at high altitude.
